Our leather wallet range
We currently offer three genuine leather wallets, each designed for a different carry style and occasion. All three are new to The Thrifty Gentleman and represent our first step into leather goods beyond watch straps... but they've been developed with the same attention to material quality and value that our customers expect from us.
What is saffiano leather?
Saffiano leather is a genuine leather with a distinctive crosshatch pattern pressed into its surface during the tanning process. The finish was originally developed by Prada in the early twentieth century and has since become the leather of choice for structured, premium accessories - wallets, bags, cardholders, and small leather goods from luxury brands across the world.
The crosshatch texture does more than look sharp: it significantly increases the leather's resistance to scratches, scuffs and moisture compared to smooth or soft-grain alternatives.
What sets saffiano apart from other leathers is its rigidity. Where castello or full-grain leathers soften and mould over time, saffiano holds its structure which means a saffiano wallet keeps its shape after years of daily use rather than becoming misshapen or baggy.

What is castello leather?
Castello leather is a naturally pebbled genuine leather, characterised by its soft, irregular grain texture. Unlike the uniform crosshatch of saffiano, the pebbled surface of castello leather is a natural result of how the hide is processed - each piece has its own subtly unique texture, which gives the finished product a more organic, handcrafted character.
Castello is softer and more supple than saffiano, making it lighter and more flexible to carry.

How to care for your leather wallet
Genuine leather is a durable material that improves with age when treated well. For day-to-day care, the most important thing is to avoid sustained exposure to moisture. If your wallet gets wet, pat it dry gently with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat. Never use a hairdryer or radiator to dry leather, as rapid heat causes it to crack and stiffen.
For saffiano leather specifically, the crosshatch surface can be wiped clean with a slightly damp cloth for surface marks. The textured finish makes it particularly forgiving compared to smooth leathers. For castello leather, an occasional application of a quality leather conditioner will keep the natural grain supple and vibrant.
