Do All Apple Watch Straps Fit All Models? And Other Options
Share
Short answer: no, not every Apple Watch strap fits every Apple Watch, but most do, and the rule is simple once you know it. Apple Watch straps come in two size families. Within a family, any strap fits any watch, from the very first Series to the new Series 12.
- Small family: 38mm, 40mm, 41mm, and the newer 42mm (Series 10, 11 and 12).
- Large family: the older 42mm (Series 1-3), 44mm, 45mm, 46mm and the 49mm Ultra.
The only real catch is the number 42, which has meant both a large and a small watch over the years. More on that below. "Will this fit my watch?" is one of the questions I get asked most, so this page is the long answer. You can view our range of watch straps, or read on.
A Brief Overview of Apple Watch Sizes
Since its debut in 2015, the Apple Watch has seen a range of iterations, each offering improvements in functionality and design.
However, one area in which Apple has been remarkably considerate is in the sizing of the watch cases and the corresponding bands.
Over the years, there have been several case sizes, but thankfully, Apple has ensured that bands maintain a certain level of compatibility across these sizes.
To understand strap compatibility, we must first appreciate the various case sizes Apple has introduced:
- Series 1, 2, and 3: Available in 38mm and 42mm case sizes (see our 38mm Apple Watch straps.
- Series 4, 5 and 6, and every SE (1st gen, 2nd gen and SE 3): Available in 40mm and 44mm case sizes (see our 40mm Apple Watch straps and 44mm Apple Watch straps).
- Series 7, 8 and 9: Available in 41mm and 45mm case sizes (see our 41mm Apple Watch straps and 45mm Apple Watch straps).
- Series 10, 11 and 12: Available in 42mm and 46mm case sizes (see our Series 10, Series 11 and Series 12 straps). Note that this 42mm is the small size, not the same as the old Series 1-3 42mm.
- Apple Watch Ultra (every generation so far): Available in 49mm (see our Apple Watch Ultra 49mm straps).
The case size is the key to understanding strap compatibility.
The good news is that Apple has kept the same slide-in connector the whole time, so straps swap across models as long as you stay in the right size family. For every Series and size in one table, see our Apple Watch strap size chart.
Compatibility of Apple Watch Straps
Here's how it works in practice:
- 38mm vs 40mm/41mm: The 38mm straps are fully compatible with the 40mm and 41mm watches. Whether you have an older Series 3 with a 38mm case or a Series 9 with a 41mm case, you’ll find that the straps are interchangeable. The lugs and connectors have been designed to fit snugly across these models.
-
Old 42mm (Series 1-3) vs 44mm/45mm/46mm: straps from a 42mm Series 1, 2 or 3 fit 44mm, 45mm and 46mm watches. If you've upgraded from a 42mm Series 3 to a 45mm Series 9 or a 46mm Series 12, your old straps come with you.
- New 42mm (Series 10, 11 and 12) vs 38mm/40mm/41mm: the newer 42mm is a small-family size. It takes the same straps as 38mm, 40mm and 41mm watches, not the old 42mm straps. This is the one that catches people out. If a strap says "42mm", check which Series it was made for.
- Apple Watch Ultra (49mm): The Ultra is in the large family. Straps made for 44mm, 45mm and 46mm watches fit it, and most 49mm straps fit those watches too. Some chunkier Ultra-style straps can look oversized on a smaller case, but they'll still attach.
Apple deserves credit here. It has kept the same strap connector across the whole range.
This allows users to retain their favourite straps even as they upgrade their watch, making it a sustainable and economical choice.
Let’s then discuss the materials and compatibility considerations for these.
What About the New Series 12?
The Series 12 (September 2026) comes in 42mm and 46mm, the same as the Series 10 and 11, so every strap for those watches fits it, size for size. If you're upgrading from something older:
- 42mm Series 12: your 38mm, 40mm, 41mm and Series 10/11 42mm straps fit.
- 46mm Series 12: your 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, 49mm and old Series 1-3 42mm straps fit.

Material Considerations and Their Compatibility
While the case size is pivotal in determining strap compatibility, the material of the strap also plays a significant role.
Apple offers a variety of materials including:
- Silicone: Known for its comfort and durability, silicone straps are a popular choice for daily wear and athletic activities. They’re designed to fit seamlessly across the compatible sizes mentioned earlier.
- Leather: A touch of class, the leather straps offer a more formal appearance. Due to the nature of leather, these straps may wear differently depending on how often you switch them between watches, but size compatibility remains unaffected.
- Metal: Metal bands, including the Milanese Loop and Link Bracelet, provide a more sophisticated look. However, some metal bands are tailored specifically to certain models, so while they may physically fit, the design might not perfectly match the aesthetics of a different-sized case.
- Nylon and Fabric: These offer a lightweight and breathable option, ideal for the warmer months or casual wear. Again, compatibility remains, provided you stick within the compatible sizes.
When selecting a strap, consider not just the size but also the material, as it contributes to the overall comfort and style.
Why Consider Alternatives?
Now, you may be wondering, “If Apple’s own straps offer such versatility, why consider alternatives?”
There's a whole world of good third-party straps out there, and The Thrifty Gentleman is one of the places that sells them.
Apple's own straps are well made, but they can be considered expensive for what they are. A third-party strap that uses the same connector type costs a fraction of the price, which makes it realistic to own several and swap them round: one for the gym, one for work, one for the weekend.
At The Thrifty Gentleman, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse selection of Apple Watch-compatible bands that cater to a wide range of tastes and preferences.
Whether you want a leather band for the office, a silicone strap for the gym, or a metal band for evenings out, you’ll find an array of options that not only fit your watch perfectly but also complement your very own personal style.
Our straps are designed to meet the highest standards of quality, ensuring that you can enjoy the same level of comfort and durability as you would with an official Apple strap, but at a fraction of the cost.

Moreover, our straps are designed with ease of use in mind. The connectors are crafted to ensure a secure fit, allowing you to change straps effortlessly, whether you’re matching your outfit for the day or gearing up for a workout.
Quick Answers
Do all Apple Watches use the same bands?
They all use the same connector, but there are two strap sizes. Small-family straps fit 38mm, 40mm, 41mm and the newer 42mm. Large-family straps fit the old 42mm, 44mm, 45mm, 46mm and 49mm.
Are Apple Watch straps universal?
Within a size family, yes: any brand, any Series. They're not universal across families, and they don't fit other brands of smartwatch without an adapter.
Are the Apple Watch SE 3 bands compatible with older Apple Watch models?
Yes. The SE 3 uses 40mm and 44mm cases, so its bands fit any older small-family watch (40mm band) or large-family watch (44mm band) in the matching family.
Are all Apple Watch bands the same size?
No. There are two families, as above. The width where the strap meets the watch is different between them, so a small strap won't lock into a large watch.
Do Solo Loops fit every model?
They fit any watch in the right size family, but they're also sized to your wrist. If you change families (41mm to 45mm, say), you'll need a new one.
I have a 42mm watch. Which straps do I buy?
Check the Series. If it's a Series 1-3, buy straps for 44mm/45mm/46mm. If it's a Series 10, 11 or 12, buy straps for 38mm/40mm/41mm or the newer 42mm.
In conclusion then, while not all Apple Watch straps fit all models, the clever design from Apple means that a large number do.
However, when it comes to variety, affordability, and personal style, you needn’t limit yourself to Apple’s official range.
At The Thrifty Gentleman, we offer an exceptional selection of straps that cater to all your needs, ensuring your Apple Watch is always dressed to impress.
