Best Affordable Wallets for Men in the UK: How to Buy Real Leather for Less
Share
A good affordable wallet is genuine leather, neatly stitched, the right size for what you carry, and comes with a fair returns policy. In the UK, you can get that for under £40: our three genuine leather wallets run from £19.99 to £39.99. What you want to avoid is a wallet that calls itself "leather" but is PU or bonded leather, which tends to crack and peel.
What "affordable" should get you
Affordable shouldn't mean disposable. For £20 to £40 you should expect:
- Real leather, not a plastic finish with a leather label.
- Even stitching with no loose threads at the corners.
- A lining you can feel that isn't thin enough to tear when you push a card in.
- Sensible sizes that you can check before you buy.
- Time to change your mind. A 60-day returns policy is a good sign that the seller trusts the product.
Genuine, bonded or PU: how to tell
- Genuine leather is made from real animal hide. It has a natural feel and smell and improves with use.
- Bonded leather is leather scraps glued together with a coating. It looks similar new, but the surface can flake with wear.
- PU (polyurethane) is a plastic coating on a fabric base. It's cheap and often sold as "vegan leather" or "faux leather". It doesn't age like leather.
If the listing doesn't say "genuine leather" and name the finish, ask before you buy. Ours say it plainly: saffiano or castello, both genuine leather, never PU or bonded leather.
Five checks before you buy
1. Does it say genuine leather and what finish? Saffiano is a firm, scratch-resistant cross-hatch finish; castello is soft and supple.
2. Are the dimensions listed? Ours are: 107 × 72 mm for the navy card holder, 108 × 84 mm for the saffiano card holder, 118 × 89 × 24 mm closed for the bifold.
3. Does the card count suit you? Four to six cards is a slim card holder; ten or more needs a larger card holder or bifold.
4. Is the price fair for the size? Price per use matters more than price tag: a wallet used daily for years costs pennies a day.
5. Can you send it back? Look for at least 30 days, ideally more. Ours is 60.

Affordable wallet FAQs
Is a cheap leather wallet worth it?
Yes, if it's genuine leather and well made. A £20 to £40 wallet used every day is good value; a £10 wallet that peels in six months isn't.
What is bonded leather?
Bonded leather is made from leather scraps and fibres glued together and coated. It's cheaper than genuine leather and wears less well.
How much should a good wallet cost?
There is no fixed price, but for genuine leather in the UK, around £20 to £40 is a fair range for a card holder or bifold. Our wallets sit in that range.
Do cheap wallets come with returns?
Not always. Check before you buy. Ours come with 60-day returns, and we're happy to answer questions by email first.
