Why buy a Marine Nationale strap?

With threads of history sewn into every strap and band, the Marine Nationale collection from The Thrifty Gentleman is a tribute to those bands worn by the French seamen of the 60s and 70s. But you don’t have to be a vintage Victor to rock these stunning replacement bands. After all, like most military watch straps, they were designed to be comfortable, durable, and easy to put on, or whip off at a moment’s notice.

As divers’ watch straps, the Marine Nationale collection can accompany you to the gym, on a quiet camping trip or to the bottom of the Med with no snaps or failures.

If you are partial to a bit of 1970’s flair, however, the elasticated nylon material, which pays homage to the original parachute material used, allows for bright colours and bold patterns to match any outfit.

Similar to The Thrifty Gentleman NATO watch straps, Marine Nationale bands exude an air of elegant military styling. This is why they’re great for:

A Soft Touch: If you often wear comfortable jumpers and loose-fitting shirts, Marine Nationale straps preserve this relaxed feeling without dulling your chic styling choices. The supple and lightweight nature of these watch bands ensures gentleness on your wrist, making them ideal for day-to-night wear too.

Adding Colour: If neutrals and monochrome pieces are your thing, a bright blue or orange Marine Nationale watch strap will add a pop of colour to any outfit. On the other hand, for seamless styling, the Marine Nationale collection also features several beige, grey and black options.

Matching Accessories: With minimal, rounded, silver hardware, Marine Nationale bands are timeless companions for a range of accessories. Whether your favourite watch dial is a shining silver, or you’re showing off your grandfather’s vintage dog tags, our straps blend into your ensemble.

FAQs on the range

How do you put on a French Marine Nationale watch strap?

French Marine Nationale straps work a little differently to traditional quick release watch straps. You simply slide the keeper up and down the strap until the loop is the right size for your wrist. Attaching the clasp to the keeper completes the loop and you are now ready to put your watch on.

How long does a Marine Nationale strap last?

Our replacement Marine Nationale watch straps and bands are made to last. Their durability will depend on how frequently it’s exposed to water, sun, and physical stress. But there’s no reason why your band won’t last for several years to come.

What is the difference between a Marine Nationale vs Paratrooper strap?

Marine Nationale and Paratrooper straps are both elasticated watch bands with military-inspired designs, but they differ in materials, construction, and style. The Marine Nationale strap, named after the French Navy, is typically made from soft, water-resistant elastic or nylon, featuring a woven pattern and an adjustable catch. It uses a single-pass design that keeps a low profile and offers a vintage aesthetic, making it comfortable and secure for water-based activities or everyday wear.

Paratrooper straps, inspired by paratrooper gear, use a slightly thicker and more durable elastic material, providing a firmer fit suited for high-movement activities. They often feature a hook-and-loop closure for easy adjustments and have a bulkier, tactical appearance. This strap style is also a single pass, but the thicker material makes it highly durable, ideal for rugged or outdoor use. While slightly less breathable than Marine Nationale straps, Paratrooper straps ensure a snug fit even with vigorous movement, offering both security and durability.
